    Logistic information

    Summary and objectives
    The Engineering for the Americas Symposium is part of an effort to address the improvement of engineering in the Americas , which emerges from a movement that had grown during the past years and that has been recognized as a priority for the Hemisphere. This symposium will have three foci: needs of the productive sector for engineering graduates, and capacity building; quality assurance in engineering education; and country planning for financing of upgrades to engineering education. The symposium aims to enhance the dialogue among leaders of the Americas from the diverse sectors related to this topic to ensure a continuity of an exchange mechanism and the implementation of actions towards the improvement of engineering in the Americas .

    Addressed to : the leaders of the Americas from the diverse sectors related to this topic, including outstanding engineers; experts and professionals from academia, industry and government sectors, as well as professional associations and accreditation and quality insurance bodies.

    Participants
    It is foreseen the participation of approximately 300 people from diverse entities such as the government, the private sector and universities.

    Place and date
    The Engineering for the Americas Symposium will be held in Lima , Peru from November 29 th to December 2 nd , 2005.

    Languages
    Simultaneous interpretation will be provided during the Engineering for the Americas Symposium. For the Plenary Sessions there will be interpretation in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and in English and Spanish for the Working Groups.

    Currency
    The monetary unit in Peru is the nuevos soles . Today, the exchange rate varies around 3.41 nuevos soles per dollar. The United States dollar is accepted in the majority of businesses, restaurants and stores at the current exchange rate. Also, most of them accept internationally known credit cards.

    It is advisable to change money at hotels, banks, or authorized exchange houses, which are open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  On Saturdays, most banks are open only until noon.

    Weather
    During November and December, temperature varies between 66 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit, or 19 and 22 degrees Centigrade.

    Local time
    In November, the local time in Lima is the same as in Washington , D.C.

    Electricity
    The electrical standard is 220 volts AC, 60 cycles. Some hotels have 110 volts. It is advisable to verify if your electronic devices resist different electric charges. If it is not the case, it is suggested to take with you a 220/110 volts adapter.
